Disaster Management
Disaster is a sudden accident or a natural catastrophe that causes great damage
or loss of life. Every year Nepal suffers from a monumental loss of life and property due
to disasters. Nepal lies at an earthquake-prone area; it is the 11th riskiest place according
to the United Nations. Every year more than 1000 people on average die due to floods
and landslides. Many of these disasters cannot be entirely avoided but the loss of life
and property can be greatly minimized by using the right tools and preparations. Manyideas have
been put forward and greatly reduced the risks by the disasters in developed
nations.
Modernization and technical innovations are lacking in the context of Nepal.
With the right tools and preparations lives of thousands can be saved every year. Since
some disasters are inevitable tools can also be developed to help ease the response and
rescue after said disasters. These tools are a matter of life and death to the people
affected by the disasters so the creation of these tools and innovations in the sector is a
must. These tools must be reliable, resilient, portable, scalable, economically viable and
diligent.
Main Theme
- Technical and economical feasibility are two of the major pillars of any idea under
this theme.
- Since disaster management deals with life and death, ideas must be a high degree of
reliability and effectiveness.
- The idea can deal with preparation and awareness before the disaster, help during the
disaster or can be focused to deal with the rescue and rehabilitation after the disaster.
- Any sudden accident may be taken as a disaster but under the theme, disaster covers
catastrophes affecting thousands of lives.
Projects demonstration
- Each project will be given a stall of (2m X 3m) to demonstrate projects.
- At least one presenter must be available in a stall at any time.
- The presenter must describe their ideas to interested visitors.
- The arrival time of a jury team is informed only before 30 min.
- If the project malfunction at the time of presentation the team can still present their
idea with a deduction of some points.
Point System
The jury team will decide the exact marking scheme but the marking scheme is based on
the following theme.* The idea with higher practicality ( which can be easily applied in the context of Nepal)
will be given higher importance.
- The judgment will be done on the basis of its impact i.e in what respects it can solve
the problem it has been designed to solve.
- The reliability of the idea in life and death situations in disaster management is a
must.
- The ideas originality and ease of application. The easier the solution to the complex
problem the better. However, the final decision will lie on the jury and will be based on the presentation.
Jury team
The VECTOR organizing committee will collaborate with the executive committee of
the Free Students Union and Paschimanchal Campus to finalize the jury team. The
decision made by the jury team will be fair and unguided. In case of the result of the
competition the decision made by the jury team will be a final decision.
General Rules
- Each team will have 5 min for presentation in front of the jury team.
- The team must be present every day of the event.
- Any activities that bring disrespect to the jury team will be taken as an activity
against the event so will be punished accordingly.
- The time of arrival of the jury team is informed in the stall. If none of the team
members are present during jury visit the team will get 0 points and can be termed as
eliminated.
- Participate should not dismantle their projects before completion of the whole
competition.
- In case of any kind of dispute the decision made by the organizing committee will be
a final and binding decisio n.
DisqualificationThe team with the following activity will be disqualified
- Violation of the general rule of the competition.
- Use of explosives, fires or dangerous chemical which may endanger life or property.
- Involvement or attempt of destruction of others project.
- Any form of plagiarism or any other form of cheating
- Behaviors that may offend or bring hurt to any caste, religion, sex or nationality.
Team Specification
A team may consist of a maximum of 5 members. There is no restriction
for participation. Students from any part of the nation can form their teams with
anyone. Students from any field can participate.
Eligibility
Any individual who is keen to share his/her ideas is open to participate. Anyone
who wants to take part must fill up a Registration Form and pay an amount of
Rs 500.
Rewards and Certification
A cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with certificates will be provided to the winning team.
Every participating team will be given a Certificate of Participation.
Registration Information
- Teams must register for “Tourism” with names and two passport size photos of all the
members within the end of Mangsir.
- A registration fee of Rs 500
has to be paid during registration (includes lunch set).
